Pepper Home Grasscloth – Professional Installation

Grasscloth is one of the most distinctive and luxurious wallcoverings available. Made from natural fibers, it brings texture, depth, warmth, and natural variation to a room in a way conventional printed wallpaper cannot duplicate.

This project featured a high-end patterned natural grasscloth from Pepper Home and was one of the more challenging grasscloth installations I have completed.

One Continuous 75-Yard Roll

Unlike conventional wallpaper supplied in multiple smaller rolls, the material for this project arrived as one continuous roll of approximately 75 yards.

The grasscloth was approximately 36 inches wide, making the roll unusually large and challenging to handle. The material had to be carefully measured, cut, prepared, and installed while protecting the natural face of the grasscloth throughout the process.

Working with a roll of this size also required a substantial work area and a large wallpaper table.

Slanted Ceiling, Six Windows, Three Doors & Numerous Corners

The room itself added considerably to the complexity of the installation.

The project included a slanted ceiling, six windows, three doors, numerous corners, and multiple architectural transitions. Each opening required careful measuring, cutting, and positioning while maintaining a consistent appearance as the installation progressed around the room.

The slanted ceiling created another challenge because the termination point at the top of each strip changed as the ceiling height changed.

Installing Grasscloth in a Furnished Room

As the project photographs show, this was also a fully furnished room.

Because of the size of the material and the workspace required to prepare it, furniture had to be carefully repositioned as the installation progressed around the room.

This is one reason I recommend providing as much clear working space as possible for a professional wallpaper installation. With wide or delicate specialty wallcoverings such as grasscloth, adequate workspace helps protect both the material and the furnishings while allowing the installer to properly prepare and handle each piece.

Natural Grasscloth Is Intentionally Different

Natural grasscloth is not intended to have the perfectly uniform appearance of conventional printed wallpaper.

Because it is made from natural fibers, variations in color, texture, weave, and shading are part of the material's character. Individual panels and seams may remain visible after installation.

Pepper Home similarly notes that its natural grasscloth can display variations in color and fiber texture and that panel seams will be visible after installation.

These are natural characteristics of grasscloth rather than installation defects.

Specialty Materials Require Specialty Installation

Grasscloth requires careful handling throughout the installation process. The face of natural wallcoverings can be sensitive to adhesive, moisture, excessive handling, and aggressive cleaning.

Before installing any specialty wallcovering, I review the manufacturer's requirements for wall preparation, adhesive, material handling, trimming, and installation technique rather than assuming that every wallpaper should be installed the same way.

A project like this—approximately 75 yards of grasscloth installed around windows, doors, corners, and a slanted ceiling in a furnished room—is a good example of why professional wallpaper installation involves much more than simply putting paper on a wall.

Grasscloth wallpaper is a natural fiber material that requires a different installation process than standard wallpaper. Here are some tips for installing grasscloth wallpaper:

• Follow the manufacturer's instructions: Some recommend stopping after three strips if the product doesn't look right.

• Plan out the room: Since all seams will be visible, make sure the placement looks good.

• Prime the walls: Use wallpaper primer to help the wallpaper hang longer.

• Protect your floor: Put down a drop cloth to catch any adhesive that might fall.

• Choose the right adhesive: Natural grasscloth is fragile, so thin adhesives might leak through to the front. Some recommend using a standard clear wallpaper paste. MFG instructions are very important for this step

• Apply adhesive: Spread the adhesive evenly on the wall where the first panel will go or it could be paste the paper and book it which again you must follow MFG suggestions

• Book the wallpaper: Roll up the strip and let it sit for a few minutes to rest.

• Apply the panel: Hang the panel on the wall.

• Use a smoothing brush: A smoothing brush might work better than a seam roller or smoothing tool.

• Understand with this wallpaper it is not "printed" it is unique and with that you will see the seams and you will see imperfections in the paper. This paper is not recommended for people who want things to look perfect as this is an imperfect paper.
